Erewash Borough Council will provide free one hour parking in its town centre car parks in Ilkeston and Long Eaton next year after the scheme was approved at the Council Executive meeting this morning. (Thursday 30th Nov)
Councillors gave the go-ahead for a six month trial of the free parking as part of the council’s wider programme of town centre regeneration.
The council’s pilot scheme will begin on 5 January next year and run through to the end of June – meaning all the spaces in the busiest town centre car parks will be free for one hour.
Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Environment, says:
“We see this as a very positive scheme that will be welcomed by both traders and residents alike – and we are confident it is a major step in our continued drive to help regenerate our high streets. We certainly hope it will encourage more residents to support their town centre and to shop locally. Over the six months we will be asking traders to help us monitor the impact and see if it does make a difference.”
The free one-hour scheme will replace the free 30-minute bays that have been available over the last year.
The car parks which will have the free one-hour parking next year are: Ilkeston – East Street, Baker Street, Chapel Street, Pimlico, Station Road, Wilton Place, Albion Centre, Albion Centre extension, Club Row, Queen Street and South Street. Long Eaton - Claye Street, Gibb Street, Beaconsfield Street, Lawrence Street and the Town Hall.
