Roof repair on the cards

A £4,000 grant to help towards roof repair costs at Ashbrook Community Centre in Borrowash is expected to get the seal of approval at a meeting of Erewash Borough Council’s Executive next week.

The centre’s Building Committee has been backed by Ockbrook and Borrowash Parish Council to apply for the money as part of the council’s Rural Community Grant Scheme.

The roof repairs are needed before the centre can be re-opened for community and private use. The building is owned by Derbyshire County Council but it is currently considering an application by the Building Committee members for a 50 year lease of the premises.

Councillor Gerri Hickton, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Community Engagement, says:

“This grant scheme is aimed at helping fund projects in our rural communities and this application is exactly the sort of thing that it was set up for. Approving this grant will help get repairs underway to bring the community centre back into use for local residents.”

Councillors are expected to give the grant the green light, with the condition that the money is not released until there is written confirmation from the county council that the 50 year lease of the centre to the Ashbrook Community Centre Building Committee is in place.

Applications for a Rural Community Grant are currently open, with a deadline of 5.30pm on Wednesday 8 August. Applications are accepted from parish councils on behalf of organisations, with only one bid per parished area permitted.

The council has again made £62,500 available for this financial year and funding can be for anything ranging from buildings, equipment and regeneration projects through to open spaces or any scheme that will improve the lives of local communities.
